Two animals of the same species, same age, same habitat. Release them together and one lives. The other does not. Species, anatomy, and landscape will not tell you which. In 1963 Niko Tinbergen gave ethology four questions that still organize the field. They are necessary. They are not sufficient. All four start with a behavior and work outward. None of them asks about the animal that produces it.Configuration names that missing question and answers it with five components: body, personality, beliefs, emotions, and instincts. The argument is built on three research programs, not slogans. Harlow’s isolation-reared monkeys never built the social architecture their developmental windows were meant to install. Snyder’s thick-billed parrots were built thoroughly-and for captivity-then asked to survive in Arizona forest. In 2022, six blue-and-yellow macaws were configured for the destination while those windows were still open. All six survived the first year and were still alive four years later.Same vertebrate architecture. Three configurations. Three outcomes. Once the inventory can be read, the results stop looking like luck.Written for trainers, conservationists, and anyone who was taught the four questions and suspected something prior had been left out. No prior volume in the series is required.Part Three of the Applied Evolutionary Ethology series

  • European Hair, Eye, and Skin Color
    Peter Frost
Europeans, especially those from northern and eastern Europe, are unique in having diverse hair and eye colors and a skin almost as pale as an albino’s. Those colors are not only brighter than the original black and brown but also 'purer'-they lie within thin slices of the visible spectrum. Overall, that color scheme is more developed in women, who naturally have a higher incid...

  • When Evolution Stops
    Armando Simon
Evolution is a fact. The evidence for it is simply overwhelming. However, the original mechanism that generates the evolutionary process, as first put forth simultaneously by Charles Darwin and Alfred R. Wallace and which became known as Natural Selection, has now been seen to be too simplistic by some scientists aside from the hard-core neo-Darwinists who insist that nothing w...

Not tool use, not language, not theory of mind. One capacity does - simpler and more ordinary than you’d expect - and everything we call civilization is built on it. As it weakens in individuals, the civ...

  • Consequential Impact
    Chris Biro
The four quadrants of operant conditioning - add or remove, increase or decrease - have organized animal training for more than sixty years. They are technically correct. They are also built from outside the animal.A consequence is what the trainer delivers. An impact is what the animal makes of it. This book recovers the missing half of that transaction: the strategic work of ...
